The principal contractor, Pitt & Sherry needed to record the geological composition of the sea floor in the area of North West Bay to determine the viability of running an underwater sewerage line to Howden across the bay. To achieve this they commissioned KMR Drilling ,who have extensive experience with sea bed and underwater drilling, to provide a set of sea bed core samples.
KMR Drilling have a long history working with Channel Mooring Maintenance and sub-contracted to us to provide the barge and crew to facilitate this project.
The project required a large enough barge for the geo-drill rig to sit securely onboard. Our barge has a center hole running vertical from the deck to the water surface under the vessel. This makes it ideal for seabed drilling. Channel Mooring Maintenance also have extensive experience with drilling rigs having worked with many different types in the mining industry.
The drill rig was placed directly in the centre of our barge for even weight distribution.
An early start was made to ensure calm waters. At one point during the day the wave height increased and drilling had to be ceased for the day. The vessel was anchored at its four corners and monitored through the rest of the day.
